Example

Close a file after reading its contents:

FILE *fptr;

// Open a file in read mode
fptr = fopen("filename.txt", "r");

// Store the content of the file
char myString[100];

// Read the content and store it inside myString
fgets(myString, 100, fptr);

// Print the file content
printf("%s", myString);

// Close the file

Definition and Usage

The fclose() function closes a file. Closing a file will finish saving content into the file and clear memory that was used by the file pointer.

The fclose() function is defined in the <stdio.h> header file.


Syntax

fclose(FILE * fptr);

Parameter Values

Parameter Description
fptr Required. A file pointer, usually created by the fopen() function.

Technical Details

Returns: An int value which is 0 if the file was closed successfully. A different value indicates that an error occurred.
