Excel - Icon Sets
In Microsoft Excel, you can use the set of Icons built into the Conditional Formatting drop-down menu to represent the values in the selected range of cells. The icons set employs different color combinations, such as green, yellow, and red, to highlight the maximum, minimum, and middle values, helpfully contrasting the distinct values. You can also customize the Icon sets, allowing you to set your own Icon style based on the defined conditional formatting rules.
Categories of Icon Sets
Four Categories of Icon Sets are listed below −
- Directional
- Shapes
- Indicators
- Ratings
Using Icon Sets for Conditional Formatting
The following steps are given below to employ the Icon set conditional formatting −
Step 1 − First, consider the sample dataset and select the cell range C2:C15 in the Sheet2 worksheet
Step 2 − After that, go to the "Home" tab and select the "Conditional Formatting" button, and choose "Icon Sets" from the drop-down menu. Then, select the "4 Arrow(Colored)" option from the Directional category.

Step 3 − Therefore, the set of Icons( 4 arrows), which means four different arrows with distinct colors, will be inserted into the selected range of cells. The maximum employee monthly salary is displayed in the green arrow, and the minimum monthly salary is displayed in the red arrow. The monthly salary ranges from 1,00,00 to 70,000 is displayed in the yellow directional arrow icon, and the monthly salary range from 66,000 to 25,000 is shown in the red directional arrow icon.

Adding Custom Icon Sets for Conditional Formatting
You can utilize the prebuilt category of Icon sets included in the Icon sets option. You can select the More Rules discussed in this section to make the worksheet more interactive and customize the Icon style and format style.
The following steps are below to add the Custom Icon Sets Conditional Formatting −
Step 1 − First, select the range of the cells D2:D15 in the Microsoft Excel sheet2.

Step 2 − Afterward, go to the Home tab, expand the Conditional Formatting button, click on Icon Sets, and choose the More Rules option from the menu

Step 3 − Another dialog box, "New Formatting Rule Type," will open. In the "Select a Rule Type:" section, click on the "Format all cells based on their values," choose the "Three triangles" option from the drop-down menu under the Icon style, and click the OK button.

Therefore, the customized "Three triangles" style has been inserted in the range D2:D15 cells. You may also select other Icon styles from the drop-down menu, such as three Traffic lights or three symbols.
